Exponential growth of tourism since 1960's

The Caribbean is commonly referred to as the world’s most tourism-dependent region. Tourism constitutes the region’s most important economic pillar, contributing 14% of Caribbean GDP and 11% of its total employment. In the 1950's, for example, yearly about 27.000 tourists travelled to Curaçao, while nowadays over 2.000.000 tourists visit the island.
