Ecosystems provide critical ecological functions, economic value and are directly connected to the nature tourism that the islands so highly depend upon. Ecosystems are the communities of all living organisms together with all abiotic components such as soil and climate. The surface area, the fragmentation and the health of ecosystems implicitly considers all dependent species. The islands offer beaches, cactus forests, caves, coral reefs, deep sea, mangrove forests, rain and cloud forests, salinas and sea grass beds and are host for foraging, breeding, nesting and migratory stopover grounds for thousands of species such as sea turtles, flamingoes and humpback whales.
