Three regional Marine Mammal Stranding Response Workshops were organized according to the priorities defined in the 2008-2009 “Workplan and Budget for the SPAW Regional Programme” (2.4) concerning the preservation of threatened and endangered species, and the Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Mammals in the Wider Caribbean Region’s General Timetable for Implementation (2.12 (2.7.2). These three workshops follow upon the first one organized by the Eastern Caribbean Cetacean Network (ECCN) in 2005 for the Eastern Caribbean region. This report is a brief summary of the three marine mammal stranding workshops whose objective is to focus on the recommendations resulting from the workshops. 1. The Regional Workshop for the Dutch Caribbean Territories in response to Marine Mammal Strandings from 5-7 November 2009 was held in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles.
Twenty-one participants representing Protected Area management organizations, government departments, and non-governmental organizations from six Dutch Caribbean islands attended including Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, and Saba. Trainers and presenters included Charles Potter (Smithsonian Institute’s Marine Mammal Laboratory), Dr. John Reynolds (Mote Marine Laboratory), Dr. Janet Whaley (NOAA Fisheries), Dr. Nathalie Ward (Eastern Caribbean Cetacean Network/U.S. Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary Program); Ms. Andrea Bogomolni (Eastern Caribbean Cetacean Network/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), and Helene Souan (SPAW Regional Activity Centre, Guadeloupe.) Paul Hoetjes was the Southern Caribbean Cetacean Network (SCCN) Coordinator in Curacao and Dr. Nathalie Ward (ECCN) served as coordinator for workshop training preparations. The US Marine Mammal Commission, Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA), the Netherlands Antilles’ government, and the Curaçao Sea Aquarium/Dolphin Academy provided funding for the workshop.

From the 21st to the 23rd of November 2022, the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) together with Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA) hosted a workshop on Marine Management in Aruba. Delegates from both governments and park management organisations representing islands in the Dutch Caribbean came together for in-depth discussion on how to address the unique challenges our islands face when protecting the ocean. It is the first time such a workshop was organised for the Dutch Caribbean. 

At the start of the workshop invited experts from Australia, Jamaica, United Kingdom, Colombia, the USA and Aruba presented examples of best practices and innovative approaches to ocean protection from around the world, which were used in problem solving exercises and round table discussions on an expansive mix of subjects such as marine park management, sustainable fisheries management, control and enforcement at sea, sustainable tourism and strategic stakeholder mapping. Minister Ursell Arends, the Minister of Integrity, Transport, Nature and Senior Affairs for the government of Aruba kicked-off the workshop, outlining the ambitious agenda that Aruba has for marine conservation, which includes establishing an ‘island-round’ marine park. 

Minister Ursell Arends: “For many years, Aruba has prioritised our economic prosperity, at the expense of our nature. The ambition is to expand the current four-area marine park to an island-round marine park as part of a larger goal for Aruba’s eventual Marine Spatial Plan. Rather than prohibit activities, the island-round marine park model will create a roadmap for a sustainable balance between the human and economic activities of our maritime space and the conservation of marine life.” 

As part of the workshop, participants were invited to hike through Parke Nacional Arikok to learn more about Aruba’s diverse flora and fauna. This hike served as a reminder of why it is vital to protect nature and also gave FPNA the chance to showcase the important work the team is doing to protect and conserve nature in Aruba. 

“We were honoured to collaborate with DCNA to host the Marine Management workshop in Aruba and welcome key stakeholders and international experts to share knowledge and expertise on marine management with the different island representatives”, said Natasha Silva, Chief Conservation Officer, FPNA. Now more than ever, our oceans are under great threat, and from the workshop it is evident that we all have ambitious plans to protect and manage our island’s marine environment and beyond. Collaboration on local level and cross-island is key in implementing innovative approaches to protect our oceans for generations to come.  

This was the first of a series of workshops that DCNA plans to host in the coming years, each time on a different island but all focused on sustainable management of natural resources and the protection of nature. This workshop was generously sponsored by the Oceans5 funders’ collaborative and supported by the Blue Marine Foundation and the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. 

“It was great to see such a big diversity of participants who were all enthusiastic about collaborating with each other,” says Irene Kingma, Policy Advisor to DCNA. “As DCNA-secretariat, we play a facilitatory role towards our members, and capacity building and knowledge sharing is a central part in that.”

DE DUTCH CARIBBEAN NATURE ALLIANCE (DCNA) EN FUNDACION PARKE NACIONAL ARUBA (FPNA) ORGANISEREN MARIEN BEHEER WORKSHOP OP ARUBA 

Van 21 tot en met 23 november 2022 organiseerde de Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) samen met Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA) een workshop over Marien Beheer op Aruba. Afgevaardigden van zowel regeringen als parkbeheerorganisaties, die eilanden in het Nederlands Caribisch gebied vertegenwoordigen, kwamen samen voor een diepgaande discussie over hoe de unieke uitdagingen waarmee onze eilanden worden geconfronteerd bij het beschermen van de oceaan, kunnen worden aangepakt. Het is de eerste keer dat een dergelijke workshop wordt georganiseerd voor het Nederlands Caribisch gebied. 

Aan het begin van de workshop presenteerden uitgenodigde experts uit Australië, Jamaica, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Colombia, de VS en Aruba voorbeelden van beste praktijken en innovatieve benaderingen van oceaanbescherming van over de hele wereld, welke werden gebruikt bij probleemoplossende oefeningen en rondetafelgesprekken over een uitgebreide mix van onderwerpen zoals marien parkbeheer, duurzaam visserijbeheer, controle en handhaving op zee, duurzaam toerisme en het in kaart brengen van strategische belanghebbenden. Minister Ursell Arends, de minister van Integriteit, Transport, Natuur en Hogere Zaken voor de regering van Aruba, trapte de workshop af en schetste de ambitieuze agenda die Aruba heeft voor het behoud van de zee, waaronder de oprichting van een ‘eiland-rond’ marien park. 

Minister Ursell Arends: “Voor vele jaren heeft Aruba onze economische welvaart geprioriteerd ten koste van onze natuur. De ambitie is om het huidige mariene park bestaande uit vier gebieden uit te breiden tot een eiland-rond marien park als onderdeel van een groter doel voor het Aruba’s uiteindelijke Mariene Ruimtelijk Plan. In plaats van het verbieden van activiteiten, zal het eiland-ronde mariene parkmodel een routekaart creëren voor een duurzame balans tussen de menselijke en economische activiteiten van onze maritieme ruimte en het behoud van zeeleven.” 

Als onderdeel van de workshop werden deelnemers uitgenodigd om door Parke Nacional Arikok te wandelen om meer te leren over Aruba’s diverse flora en fauna. Deze wandeling diende als een herinnering aan waarom het van vitaal belang is om de natuur te beschermen en het gaf FPNA ook de kans om het belangrijke werk te laten zien dat het team uitvoert om de natuur op Aruba te beschermen en te behouden. 

“We waren vereerd om samen te werken met de DCNA om de Marien Beheer Workshop op Aruba te organiseren en de belangrijkste belanghebbenden en internationale experts te verwelkomen om kennis en expertise over Marien Beheer te delen met de verschillende eilandvertegenwoordigers”, zei Natasha Silva, Hoofd Natuurbeheer, FPNA. Onze oceanen worden nu meer dan ooit bedreigd en uit de workshop blijkt dat we allemaal ambitieuze plannen hebben om het mariene milieu van onze eilanden en daarbuiten te beschermen en te beheren. Samenwerking op lokaal en eiland overschrijdend niveau is essentieel bij het implementeren van innovatieve benaderingen om onze oceanen voor toekomstige generaties te beschermen. 

Dit was de eerste van een reeks workshops die de DCNA van plan is de komende jaren te organiseren, telkens op een ander eiland maar allen gefocust op duurzaam beheer van natuurlijke bronnen en het beschermen van de natuur. Deze workshop werd genereus gesponsord door het Oceans5 financiers’ collaboratief en ondersteund door de Blue Marine Foundation en het Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence.

The Caribbean Shark Coalition (CSC) met for their first in-person summit in St. Maarten from September 12-16, 2022. The workshop brought together stakeholders from 14 different countries to provide in-field training and support towards the long-term goals of building capacity for shark and ray science and conservation in the Greater Caribbean region. 

Within the Caribbean, protection for sharks and ray varies from island to island. Even on islands that have established shark sanctuaries or shark protection measures, there are still significant gaps in education, outreach and enforcement.  In an effort to build a more unified network for shark and ray conservation, the CSC brought together individuals from 14 different countries across the Greater Caribbean region to share details of their particular challenges and successes, and to provide training on how to properly plan and execute shark conservation projects in their home countries in the future. The CSC was co-founded by the  Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) and Beneath the Waves (BTW)  in 2020 in response to international calls for enhanced, collaborative conservation efforts for sharks and rays in the Greater Caribbean region. 

In-Field Training 

Working together with the Nature Foundation St. Maarten, SXM Divers and Aquamania, participants spent two days learning how to deploy Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) stations for non-invasive habitat and species monitoring. Participants learned how to deploy and retrieve BRUVs, uniform data collection and recording techniques, and discussed methods and implementation for the devices in future projects. 

Participants also received hands on training for properly tagging and handling three species of sharks, including tiger sharks, Caribbean reef sharks and blacknose sharks. These skills include how to set a drum line, how to safely secure and release a shark, standard methods for measurements, application of visual and passive integrated transponder tags and how to take biological samples, just to name a few.

Workshop 

In conjunction with the in-field portion, participants also attended a full-day workshop to review the methodology used in the field and, more importantly, learned how to put this data into action. Dr. Oliver Shipley, Senior Research Scientist at BTW, provided key insight for proper data analysis and visualizations, important for connecting science, policy, and the general public. Tadzio Bervoets, former Director of DCNA, led a roundtable discussion on the number of challenges facing sharks (and marine conservation in general) throughout the wider Caribbean, and invited each participant to provide personal insights into how their individual organizations combat these challenges. 

Future Conservation 

Building collaboration throughout the Caribbean region works to improve interisland communication and build local capacity while also providing a deeper understanding for marine conservation and protection as a whole.  Moving forward, connections made throughout this workshop will help influence and shape shark and ray projects in the future.

Eerste succesvolle in levende lijve bijeenkomst voor de Caribbean Shark Coalition

De Caribbean Shark Coalition (CSC) ontmoette elkaar voor hun eerste keer in levende lijve in St. Maarten van 12-16 september 2022. De workshop bracht belanghebbenden uit 14 verschillende landen samen voor in-field training en om de lange termijn doelen voor capaciteitsopbouw voor de wetenschap en bescherming van haaien en roggen in het Caribische gebied te ondersteunen.

Binnen het Caribisch gebied varieert de bescherming van haaien en roggen drastisch van eiland tot eiland. Zelfs op eilanden die haaienreservaten hebben opgericht, zijn er nog steeds aanzienlijke tekortkomingen in onderwijs, outreach en handhaving. In een poging om een ​​meer verenigd netwerk voor het behoud van haaien en roggen op te bouwen, bracht de CSC individuen uit 14 verschillende landen in het Caribisch gebied samen om meer informatie over hun specifieke uitdagingen en successen te delen en training te geven om haaienbeschermingsprojecten in de toekomst goed te plannen en uit te voeren. De CSC werd in 2020 opgericht door de Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) en Beneath the Waves (BTW) als reactie op internationale oproepen om de gezamenlijke inspanningen voor het behoud van haaien en roggen in het Caribisch gebied te verbeteren.

In-Field Training

In samenwerking met Nature Foundation St. Maarten, SXM Divers en Aqua Mania heeft het CSC twee dagen in het water doorgebracht om te leren hoe de zogenaamde Baited Remote Underwater Videos (BRUVs)  kunnen worden ingezet voor het monitoren van niet-invasieve habitats en soorten. Deelnemers leerden hoe ze BRUV’s konden inzetten en ophalen, uniforme gegevensverzameling en -registratie, en bespraken methoden en implementatie voor de apparaten in toekomstige projecten.

Deelnemers kregen ook praktische training voor het correct merken van drie soorten haaien, waaronder tijgerhaaien, Caribische rifhaaien en zwartsnuithaaien. Deze vaardigheden omvatten onder andere het opzetten van een drumlijn, het veilig vasthouden en loslaten van een haai, standaardmethoden voor metingen, het aanbrengen van Floy-tags en passieve geïntegreerde transpondertags en het nemen van biologische monsters.

Workshop

Naast het veldgedeelte, namen de deelnemers ook deel aan een workshop om de in het veld gebruikte methodologie te herzien en, belangrijker nog, te leren hoe deze gegevens in actie konden worden gebracht. In de toekomst zullen de verbindingen die tijdens deze workshop werden gelegd, helpen bij het beïnvloeden en vormgeven van toekomstige haaien- en roggenprojecten.

De workshop werd gecoördineerd door het DCNA en BTW en werd mogelijk gemaakt dankzij financiering van Blue Marine Foundation, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-NL)  en operationele steun van GoPro for a Cause.

Last week, the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance hosted a sea urchin (Diadema Antillarum) restoration workshop on Saba. This workshop was led by University of Applied Sciences Van Hall Larenstein (VHL). During the workshop experts and representatives from the Dutch Caribbean and Jamaica came together to join forces towards coral reef restoration. This workshop helped 21 coral experts from the Caribbean region and more than 65 online attendants, to obtain a comprehensive view of the overall situation of the Diadema sea urchin in the Caribbean, including the current die-off events and restoration techniques. Important discussions have taken place to determine the next steps needed to mitigate the loss of Diadema sea urchins on a regional scale.

Coral Reef Restoration

Coral reef restoration methods are showing promising results in supporting regional efforts for restoring degraded coral reefs in the Dutch Caribbean. Coral reef restoration in the Dutch Caribbean has focused heavily on corals. This workshop was built upon research and innovation that introduces the restoration of the important algae grazer: Long-spined Sea urchins (scientific name Diadema antillarum).

Diadema sea urchins

Diadema sea urchins play a critical role in maintaining healthy coral reefs, which are essential for coastal protection and a crucial source of income for people in the Dutch Caribbean as they are a magnet for tourism. Diadema sea urchins help sustain the delicate balance within the reef by grazing on algae, which

are the main competitors of corals. In the mid-1980s, a disease swept through the Caribbean, wiping out nearly the entire sea urchin population. In mid-February 2022, reports started getting in about new extensive die-offs in the Caribbean region. By restoring Diadema sea urchins alongside corals and solving local threats such as wastewater issues, corals will have a higher chance to survive.

Workshop outcomes

In the RAAK Pro Diadema project VHL works closely together with other research institutes and local partners to restore long spined sea urchin populations on the coral reefs around Saba and St. Eustatius. This project is showing promising results. The lead researchers Alwin Hylkema and Tom Wijers shared their impressive tools, techniques, and latest scientific findings to facilitate the restoration of Diadema in the Wider Caribbean region during the DCNA workshop.

Several topics were discussed, including the status of these reduced Diadema sea-urchins, recent Diadema die-off events and Diadema restoration techniques. The participants also received hands-on training sessions, to improve practical skills related to Diadema restoration. Besides the 21 participants present on Saba, over 65 people followed the open presentations online.

Multi-island project

During the workshop, there was intense dialogue between the Caribbean islands. Important partnerships have been established and knowledge and capacity gaps identified which needs to be solved to restore the Diadema sea urchins in the Dutch Caribbean. VHL, DCNA and the organizations present are now looking into the possibility to set-up a multi-island Diadema restoration project to accomplish a common goal: Restoring one of the most important and damaged marine ecosystems, the coral reefs.

This workshop was generously funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) as a support to the Nature and Environmental Policy Plan for the BES-islands, the Dutch Postcode Lottery and SIA, part of the Dutch Research Council (NWO).

Vorige week organiseerde de Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance een workshop voor het herstel van de zee-egels (Diadema Antillarum) op Saba. Deze workshop was onder leiding van de Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein (VHL). Tijdens de workshop kwamen de deskundigen en vertegenwoordigers uit het Nederland Caribisch gebied en Jamaica samen om de krachten te bundelen voor het herstel van koraalriffen. Deze workshop hielp 21 koraalexperts uit het Caribisch gebied en meer dan 65 online aanwezigen om een uitgebreid beeld te krijgen van de algehele situatie van de Diadema-zee-egel in het Caribisch gebied, inclusief de huidige voorvallen van afsterving en restauratietechnieken. Er hebben belangrijke besprekingen plaatsgevonden om te bepalen welke volgende stappen nodig zijn om het verlies van de Diadema-zee-egels op regionale schaal te beperken.

Herstel van koraalriffen

 Herstelmethoden voor koraalriffen laten veelbelovende resultaten zien bij het ondersteunen van regionale inspanningen voor het herstel van aangetaste koraalriffen in de Nederlandse Cariben. Het herstel van koraalriffen in de Nederlandse Cariben is sterk gericht op koralen. Deze workshop was gebaseerd op onderzoek en innovatie die het herstel van de belangrijke algengrazer introduceert: de zee-egel Diadema antillarum.

Diadema zee-egels

De Diadema-zee-egels spelen een cruciale rol bij het in standhouden van gezonde koraalriffen, die essentieel zijn voor kustbescherming en een cruciale bron van inkomsten zijn voor de mensen in de Nederlandse Cariben omdat ze een magneet zijn voor het toerisme. Diadema-zee-egels helpen het delicate evenwicht in het rif te behouden door te grazen op algen, de belangrijkste concurrenten van koralen. Halverwege de jaren tachtig raasde een ziekte door het Caribisch gebied en vernietigde bijna de hele zee-egelpopulatie. Medio februari 2022 kwamen er berichten binnen over nieuwe grootschalige gevallen van afstervingen in het Caribisch gebied. Door de Diadema-zee-egels naast koralen te herstellen en de lokale bedreigingen zoals afvalwaterproblemen op te lossen, hebben koralen een grotere kans om te overleven.

Resultaten van de Workshop

In het RAAK Pro Diadema-project werkt VHL nauw samen met andere onderzoeksinstituten en lokale partners om de populaties van langdoornige zee-egels op de koraalriffen rond Saba en St. Eustatius te herstellen. Dit project laat veelbelovende resultaten zien. De hoofdonderzoekers Alwin Hylkema en Tom Wijers deelden tijdens de DCNA-workshop hun indrukwekkende tools, technieken en nieuwste wetenschappelijke bevindingen om het herstel van de Diadema in het bredere Caribische gebied te vergemakkelijken.

VHL, DCNA en de aanwezige organisaties onderzoeken nu de mogelijkheid om een multi-eiland Diadema restauratieproject op te zetten om een gemeenschappelijk doel te bereiken: het herstel van een van de belangrijkste en meest beschadigde mariene ecosystemen, de koraalriffen.

Deze workshop werd gefinancierd door het Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit (LNV) ter ondersteuning van het Natuur- en Milieubeleidsplan voor de BES-eilanden, de Nationale Postcode Loterij en SIA, dat een onderdeel is van de Nederlandse Onderzoeksraad (NWO).

The Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) recently supported the attendance of representatives from the Protected Area Management Organizations of Aruba (Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba), Bonaire (STINAPA), Saba (Saba Conservation Foundation) and Sint Maarten (the Nature Foundation) to a five-day BirdsCaribbean Landbird Monitoring Workshop in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic where participants were trained in increasing the capability to monitor landbirds in the wider-Caribbean Region.

Monitoring the health of landbird populations is vitally important to understand changes in population sizes and distributions of species in response to environmental changes and threats, such as from climate change, pollution, invasive species, development, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, and more. Through the monitoring of the health of landbird populations in the Dutch Caribbean, conservation managers will be better able to tell how these species, and the nature areas in which they live, are doing. The data they gather will help decision-makers to plan conservation and management actions to ensure the Dutch Caribbean’s amazing birds will be around for our children and grandchildren to see and enjoy.

We are grateful to Birds Caribbean for organizing this Training of Trainers workshop. With the skills learned during this workshop we will be able to increase the way we protect our nature areas on land which are some of the most threatened spaces on our islands,” commented Tadzio Bervoets, Director of the DCNA.

The participation of qualified local conservationists to the workshop was made possible through the support of the US Fish and Wildlife Service Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act Fund, Environment and Climate Change Canada, US Forest Service International Programs, Optics for the Tropics, and the DCNA.

BirdsCaribbean landvogel monitoring workshop

De Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) maakte onlangs de deelname van vertegenwoordigers van de beheerorganisaties van beschermde natuurgebieden op Aruba (Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba), Bonaire (STINAPA), Saba (Saba Conservation Foundation) en Sint Maarten (the Nature Foundation) mede mogelijk aan een vijfdaagse BirdsCaribbean Landvogel Monitoring Workshop in Jarabacoa, Dominicaanse Republiek. Tijdens de workshop werden de deelnemers getraind in het monitoren van landvogels in de Caribische regio.

Het monitoren van de gezondheid van landvogelpopulaties is van groot belang om inzicht te krijgen in veranderingen in populatiegroottes en verspreiding van soorten als reactie op veranderingen en bedreigingen van de natuur en milieu, zoals klimaatverandering, vervuiling, invasieve soorten, ontwikkeling, orkanen, vulkaanuitbarstingen en meer. Door het monitoren van de gezondheid van landvogelpopulaties in het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden kunnen natuurbeheerders beter zien hoe het met deze soorten en de natuurgebieden waarin ze leven, gaat. De verzamelde gegevens helpen besluitvormers bij het plannen van instandhoudings- en beheeracties.  Zodat ook onze kinderen en kleinkinderen later kunnen genieten van de prachtige vogels in het Nederlands Caribisch gebied.

“We zijn BirdsCaribbean dankbaar voor het organiseren van deze workshop. Met de nieuwe vaardigheden die we tijdens deze workshop hebben geleerd, kunnen we onze natuurgebieden op het land beter beschermen, die een van de meest bedreigde gebieden op onze eilanden zijn ”, aldus Tadzio Bervoets, directeur van de DCNA.

 

De deelname van gekwalificeerde lokale natuurbeschermers aan de workshop werd mogelijk gemaakt door de steun van het US Fish and Wildlife Service Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act Fund, Environment and Climate Change Canada, US Forest Service International Programs, Optics for the Tropics en de DCNA.

Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba (FPNA) is proud to be hosting its first Coral Reef Monitoring Workshop this week, together with trainers – marine biologists Tadzio Bervoets from the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) and Roxanne-Liana Francisca from STINAPA Bonaire. Participants include representatives from FPNA, JADS, ScubbleBubbles, Caribbean Lionfish Alliance (CLA), Aquawindies and the Directorate of Nature and Environment (DNM).

During this four-day workshop, the participants – all certified divers – will be trained as data collectors following standard coral reef monitoring practices as described by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) and the Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment (AGRRA). Besides being trained in monitoring criteria, techniques and protocol, participants will also be trained in fish, invertebrate, coral recruits (baby coral), algae, coral disease, and invasive species identification – which are a crucial part of monitoring the health of coral reefs.

Coral reefs are ecosystems with possibly the highest biodiversity and unlike anything else on the planet. Apart from being incredibly varied and beautiful, and hosting an array of amazingly interesting life forms, coral reefs are essential to the economy of Aruba. Coral reefs protect our coasts from storms and are a nursery and home to numerous species that are vital to our fisheries. Coral reefs and their specialized fish also provide for Aruba’s beautiful white sandy beaches that tourists worldwide come to enjoy. However, coral reefs and their inhabitants are increasingly being threatened by coastal development, marine and coastal recreation, maritime activities, extractive activities, and land, air and marine pollution, and other impacts.

FPNA’s interim Marine Park Manager Sietske van der Wal is excited to finally start with data collection. “FPNA manages four Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that are collectively known as Parke Marino Aruba. We are the only island within the Kingdom not yet structurally monitoring the health of our coral reefs and with this workshop we will now acquire the skills to do so ourselves.”

After this workshop, FPNA – together with its partners – will be conducting coral reef surveys every two years at representative locations in order to assess the state of Aruba’s reefs, compare data over time and adapt management accordingly. Data will be shared with DCNA, GCRMN and others to be able to follow trends at a national, Kingdom and regional level. The data acquired through these surveys will also be incorporated into the management of Parke Marino Aruba.
