On Tuesday May 16th, 2023, the Minister for Climate and Energy, Drs. Rob Jetten, and his delegation visited the Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity foundation (CARMABI) on Curaçao. Here, he was welcomed by Paul Stokkermans (director of CARMABI), Cor Hameete (Head Nature and Environment Education of CARMABI), and Nina Zander (Policy Advisor of the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance – DCNA). Mr. Stokkermans and Mr. Hametee introduced the Minister and his delegation to CARMABI – both through a presentation and a tour of the CARMABI building, showcasing all the important work being executed there.

The Minister for Climate and Energy, Drs. Rob Jetten, has co-hosted the Caribbean Climate & Energy Conference on Aruba from the 10^th to the 12^th of May. After the conference on Aruba, the Minister and his delegation traveled to Curaçao. On Tuesday, May 16^th, 2023, the Minister and his delegation visited the Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity foundation (CARMABI) on Curaçao, where they were welcomed by Paul Stokkermans (director of CARMABI), Cor Hameete (Head Nature and Environment Education of CARMABI) and Nina Zander (Policy Advisor for the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance – DCNA).

The visit focused on the impact of climate issues on Curaçao. “There are several local environmental problems that are too big for the islands, but that the Kingdom might be able to help with, such as the pollution that travels from land into the sea,” said Paul Stokkermans, director of Carmabi.

Carmabi is a non-profit foundation that has been active on the island of Curaçao since 1955. The organization started as a marine biological research institute, but over the years it has also started to focus on the conservation of nature parks and nature and environmental education. The organization consists of five parts:

• Research;
• Management of terrestrial parks;
• Management of marine parks;
• Nature and environmental education;
• Ecological advice and consultancy to third parties.

During his visit, Minister Jetten received an extensive presentation from Stokkermans and Hameete. “During the presentation, we were able to inform the Minister in detail about the various work Carmabi is executing on the island, such as research and education,” says Hameete, “but we were also able to tell him more about the local environmental problems we face as an island, such as the lack of wastewater treatment for chemical wastewater, the sewage problem, and the effects of overfishing on our coral ecosystem.  This visit demonstrates a commitment to working together to address our climate, environmental, and energy challenges.”

After the presentation, the delegation was given a tour of the Carmabi site during which the Minister visited the Research Center, Marine Education Center (MEC), and the library. At the end of the visit, the minister was given the comic book “Coral Heroes,” which is written in Dutch and Papiamentu.

Before traveling to Aruba, the Minister visited Bonaire, where, amongst others, he was escorted through Bonaire’s mangrove forest on May 9^th, 2023, by the Mangrove Maniacs and the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA). “As DCNA, we think it is great to see the Minister visiting multiple Dutch Caribbean Islands to grasp the differences in culture, issues faced, and needs. We strongly support the Minister’s call for cooperation within The Kingdom” says Nina, DCNA’s Policy Advisor.

Rob Jetten, met zijn delegatie een bezoek aan de Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity foundation (CARMABI) op Curaçao. Hier werd hij verwelkomt door Paul Stokkermans (directeur CARMABI), Cor Hameete (Hoofd Natuur- en Milieueducatie CARMABI) en Nina Zander (Beleidsadviseur Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance – DCNA). De heer Stokkermans en de heer Hametee lieten de Minister en zijn delegatie kennismaken met CARMABI – zowel door middel van een presentatie als een rondleiding door het CARMABI-gebouw, waarbij al het belangrijke werk dat daar wordt uitgevoerd, werd getoond.

De Minister van Klimaat en Energie, drs. Rob Jetten was mede-gastheer van de Caribbean Climate & Energy Conference op Aruba van 10 tot 12 mei. Na de conferentie op Aruba reisde de Minister door naar Curaçao. Op dinsdag 16 mei 2023 bezochten de Minister en zijn delegatie de Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity foundation (CARMABI) op Curaçao, waar zij werden ontvangen door Paul Stokkermans (directeur CARMABI), Cor Hameete (Hoofd Natuur- en Milieueducatie van CARMABI) en Nina Zander (Beleidsadviseur voor de Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance – DCNA).

Het bezoek stond in het teken van de impact van klimaatproblematiek op Curaçao. “Er zijn verschillende lokale milieuproblemen die te groot zijn voor de eilanden, maar waar het Koninkrijk misschien wel iets aan kan doen, zoals de vervuiling die van het land in de zee terecht komt”, aldus Paul Stokkermans, directeur van Carmabi.

Carmabi is een stichting zonder winstoogmerk die sinds 1955 actief is op het eiland Curaçao. De organisatie begon als marien-biologisch onderzoeksinstituut, maar is zich in de loop der jaren ook gaan richten op het beheer van natuurparken en natuur- en milieueducatie. De organisatie bestaat nu uit 5 afdelingen:

• Wetenschappelijk onderzoek,
• Beheer van terrestrisch natuurparken,
• Beheer van mariene natuurparken,
• Natuur- en milieueducatie,
• Ecologisch advies en consultancy aan derden.

Minister Jetten kreeg tijdens zijn bezoek een uitgebreide presentatie van Stokkermans en Hameete. “Tijdens de presentatie hebben we de minister uitgebreid kunnen informeren over de verschillende werkzaamheden die Carmabi op het eiland uitvoert, waaronder onderzoek en onderwijs”, zegt Hameete, “maar ook hebben we hem meer kunnen vertellen over de lokale milieuproblematiek waarmee we als eiland worden geconfronteerd, zoals het ontbreken van afvalwaterzuivering voor chemisch afvalwater, de rioolproblematiek en de gevolgen van overbevissing op ons koraal-ecosysteem. Met dit bezoek wordt duidelijk gemaakt dat de wil om te komen tot een samenwerking, om onze uitdagingen op het gebied van klimaat, milieu en energie het hoofd te bieden, een gevolg krijgt.”

Na de presentatie kreeg de delegatie een rondleiding over het terrein van Carmabi waarbij de Minister een bezoek bracht aan het Research Center, Marine Education Center (MEC) en de bibliotheek. Aan het eind van het bezoek kreeg de minister het stripboek ‘Coral Heroes’ mee, dat geschreven is in het Nederlands en Papiamentu.

De Minister bezocht, voordat hij naar Aruba afreisde, Bonaire, waar hij onder meer door de Mangrove Maniacs en de Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) door het mangrovebos van Bonaire werd begeleid. “Als DCNA vinden we het geweldig om te zien dat de minister meerdere Nederlandse Caribische eilanden bezoekt om de verschillen in onder andere cultuur, problematiek en behoeften te begrijpen. We ondersteunen de oproep van de Minister tot samenwerking binnen het Koninkrijk”, zegt Nina, beleidsadviseur van DCNA.

Dutch, Papiamentu and Papiamento below

On Friday, January 20th, 2023, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Mr. Robbert Dijkgraaf, visited the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) office on Bonaire. After a meet & greet with the staff, the DCNA was given the opportunity to highlight the importance of research and monitoring, local nature conservation organizations and working together to safeguard nature within the Caribbean part of the Dutch Kingdom.    

Arno Verhoeven, director of the DCNA, stressed that there are only a few remaining cooperative bodies between the six islands of the Dutch Caribbean, and that the main reason DCNA works is a common understanding of nature and a willingness to share knowledge. “Actually, the Dutch Caribbean has a lot when it comes to science and research. All these passionate people working in conservation on the islands have one thing in common, their drive to protect nature – and nature has no boundaries. The knowledge and skills they accumulate in this network is enormous and their willingness to share is part of this drive. With six major nature organizations, we are an important regional knowledge centre.” says Verhoeven.  

The Dutch Caribbean is home to a wide variety of unique animal and plant species. Many of these are endangered due to loss of habitat, pollution, overgrazing and the impact of invasive species, climate change and other stressors. To manage the islands’ natural resources islands wisely and sustainably, knowledge about the complex and fragile ecosystems in the Dutch Caribbean is essential. Especially when these resources are used to support local communities and form the basis for the economic wellbeing of the islands. Therefore, research, monitoring, communication, and outreach play a crucial role. Science is a strong component in any nature programme, and when looking for more funding, it is a cornerstone of any application.

The DCNA is a non-profit organization created to protect the natural environment and to promote sustainable management of natural resources, both on land and in the water, on the six Dutch Caribbean islands. The alliance works with local park management organizations (parks) and other nature conservation organizations. It is also a representative for the local parks when dealing with governments, policy makers, or when engaging with regional or international organizations on a multi-island level.  

One of the core tasks of the DCNA is to promote and facilitate permanent dialogue, knowledge sharing, training, and cooperation between the parks. DCNA’s Research & Monitoring Working Group provides a platform where biologists of the parks meet to share experiences, knowledge, and advice regarding research and monitoring. Additionally, this group works to harmonize scientifically sound monitoring protocols for the most important biodiversity indicators (species and habitats), develops analysis tools and strategies to guide researchers (and funders) in their design and conduct of research and monitoring in the Dutch Caribbean.    

“We also support research and monitoring in the Dutch Caribbean by helping to improve communication and outreach. For example, we make scientific information more accessible through the Dutch Caribbean Biodiversity Database (DCBD), the news platform BioNews and other media channels. We are thankful to the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature, and Food Quality (LNV) for supporting this work” commented Tineke van Bussel, DCNA’s Research and Communication Liaison.   

"As a regional network spanning the Dutch Caribbean, and with a long working relationship with the local conservation community, DCNA is uniquely positioned to contribute towards the development and successful implementation of science initiatives in the region. We want to strengthen our work as a regional knowledge centre and would welcome more means to serve our stakeholders.” explains Arno Verhoeven.

Op vrijdag 20 januari 2023 heeft minister van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, de heer Robbert Dijkgraaf, een bezoek gebracht aan het kantoor van de Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) op Bonaire. Na een ontmoeting met het personeel kreeg de DCNA de gelegenheid om het belang van onderzoek en monitoring, lokale natuurbeschermingsorganisaties en samenwerking voor natuurbescherming in het Caribisch deel van het Nederlandse Koninkrijk te benadrukken. 

Arno Verhoeven, directeur van de DCNA, benadrukte dat er tussen de zes eilanden van de Nederlandse Cariben nog maar een paar overgebleven samenwerkingsorganen zijn en dat de belangrijkste reden waardoor DCNA werkt, een gemeenschappelijk begrip van de natuur en de bereidheid om kennis te delen is. “Eigenlijk heeft het Nederlands Caribisch gebied veel wanneer het op wetenschap en onderzoek aankomt. Al deze gepassioneerde mensen die werken aan natuurbehoud op de eilanden hebben één ding gemeen: hun drive om de natuur te beschermen – en de natuur kent geen grenzen. De kennis en kunde die ze in dit netwerk opdoen is enorm en hun bereidheid om dit te delen maakt deel uit van deze drive. Met zes grote natuurorganisaties zijn we een belangrijk regionaal kenniscentrum.” zegt Verhoeven. 

Het Nederlands Caribisch gebied heeft een grote verscheidenheid aan unieke dier- en plantensoorten. Veel van deze worden bedreigd door verlies van leefgebied, vervuiling, overbegrazing en de impact van invasieve soorten, klimaatverandering en andere stressoren. Om de natuurlijke hulpbronnen van de eilanden verstandig en duurzaam te beheren, is kennis over de complexe en kwetsbare ecosystemen in het Nederlands Caribisch gebied essentieel. Vooral wanneer deze middelen worden gebruikt om lokale gemeenschappen te ondersteunen en de basis vormen voor het economische welzijn van de eilanden. Daarom spelen onderzoek, monitoring, communicatie en bereik een cruciale rol. Wetenschap is een sterk onderdeel van elk natuurprogramma en bij het zoeken naar meer financiering is het een hoeksteen van elke aanvraag.

De DCNA is een non-profitorganisatie die is opgericht om de natuurlijke omgeving te beschermen en duurzaam beheer van natuurlijke hulpbronnen te bevorderen, zowel op het land als in het water, op de zes Nederlands Caribische eilanden. De alliantie werkt samen met lokale parkbeheerorganisaties (parken) en andere natuurbeschermingsorganisaties. Het is ook een vertegenwoordiger voor de lokale parken richting regeringen, beleidsmakers of in de omgang met regionale of internationale organisaties op multi-eilandniveau.  

Een van de kerntaken van het DCNA is het bevorderen en faciliteren van permanente dialoog, kennisdeling, training en samenwerking tussen de parken. DCNA’s Onderzoek & Monitoring Werkgroep biedt een platform waar biologen van de parken elkaar ontmoeten om ervaringen, kennis en advies over onderzoek en monitoring te delen. Daarnaast werkt deze groep aan het harmoniseren van wetenschappelijk verantwoorde monitoringprotocollen voor de belangrijkste indicatoren van biodiversiteit (soorten en leefgebied), ontwikkelt analysetools en strategieën om onderzoekers (en financiers) te begeleiden bij het opzetten en uitvoeren van onderzoek en monitoring in het Nederlands Caribisch gebied. 

“Ook ondersteunen we onderzoek en monitoring in het Nederlands Caribisch gebied door de communicatie en outreach te helpen verbeteren. Zo maken we wetenschappelijke informatie toegankelijker via de Dutch Caribbean Biodiversity Database (DCBD), het nieuwsplatform BioNews en andere mediakanalen We zijn het ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit (LNV) dankbaar voor de ondersteuning van dit werk”, aldus Tineke van Bussel, DCNA’s Onderzoek en Communicatie Liaison. 

“Als regionaal netwerk dat het Nederlands Caribisch gebied omspant en met een langdurige werkrelatie met de lokale natuurbeschermingsgemeenschap, bevindt de DCNA zich in een unieke positie om bij te dragen aan de ontwikkeling en succesvolle implementatie van wetenschappelijke initiatieven in de regio. We willen ons werk als regionaal kenniscentrum versterken en zouden graag meer middelen krijgen om onze stakeholders van dienst te kunnen zijn.” legt Arno Verhoeven uit.

Fun Online Nature Game for the Dutch Caribbean 

DCNA’s Big Live Nature Quiz local Host Edrieënna Brandao

On April 22nd, the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) hosted its Big Live Nature Quiz for adults on Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Eustatius, and St. Maarten. A total of 150+ individuals participated in the online, live and interactive quiz. After many exciting and thrilling nature question rounds, a team on Curaçao won. Second place went to a team on Aruba and third place to a team on Saba. 

The online Big Live Nature Quiz is created to educate citizens about nature in a fun interactive way, to instill pride about the islands’ nature, encourage eco-friendly practices, support the parks conservation projects, and to connect people throughout the Dutch Caribbean.

Yearly Free Quiz for Adults and Kids 

This a yearly event for both adults and kids since 2020. For 2022, the kids’ edition is currently planned for the beginning of November. Stay tuned for your next chance to learn more about the nature of the Dutch Caribbean. 

Live and Interactive Quiz 

Teams could participate in two ways. Teams were invited to play from home/online with friends and family or join at one of the broadcast locations (bars).

The Quiz was online and live. Therefore, all teams from the Dutch Caribbean islands could participate at the same time as well as interact with each other and the host of the program. 

Broadcast locations included Aruba: Chaos Café, Bonaire: Hillside, Saba: Long Haul, St. Eustatius: Ocean View Terrace, St. Maarten: Dinghy Dock Sailors Bar. A big thank you to STINAPA Bonaire, CARMABI on Curaçao, Aruba National Park Foundation, Saba Conservation Foundation, STENAPA on St Eustatius, Nature Foundation Sint Maarten and WeConnect for their support and creating this event. 

 

Theme: Endangered animals and plants 

The quiz had a total of 20 multiple choice trivia questions. The quiz was in English but questions also had Dutch, Papiamentu and Papiamento subtitles. Questions included species such as sea turtles, sharks and iguanas.

First place went to “Vreemde Vogels” on Curaçao. They will receive a sailing trip around their beautiful island. Second place went to “Lucky’s Group Therapy” on Aruba and third place to “What a Team” on Saba. Island winners of Bonaire are the Barracudas. For St Maarten: Chicken Dinner (Emily Koch) and St. Eustatius: The Shallows 

They received smaller prizes. Congratulations to all!

Big Live Nature Quiz- Winnaars op Curaçao, Aruba and Saba

Leuke Online Natuur Game voor het Nederlands Caribisch gebied 

Op 22 april heeft de Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) de Big Live Nature Quiz voor volwassenen op Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Eustatius, en St. Maarten georganiseerd. Meer dan 150 mensen hebben deelgenomen aan de online, live en interactieve quiz. Na veel interessante en spannende rondes van vragen over de natuur, heeft een team op Curaçao gewonnen. De tweede plaats ging naar een team op Aruba en de derde plaats naar een ander team op Saba. 

De online Big Live Nature Quiz is opgezet om burgers op een leuke, interactieve manier voor te lichten over natuurbehoud, om een gevoel van trots zijn op de natuur van de eilanden te scheppen, om natuurvriendelijke praktijken aan te moedigen, om de projecten van de natuur beheer parken te ondersteunen en om mensen binnen op de Nederlands Caribische eilanden met elkaar in contact te brengen.

Jaarlijks Gratis Quiz voor Volwassenen en Kinderen 

Dit is een jaarlijks evenement voor zowel volwassenen als voor kinderen sinds 2020. Voor 2022, is de kindereditie momenteel gepland begin November. Volg de DCNA (www.BigLiveNatureQuiz.org) om de volgende quiz niet te missen en om op een leuke manier te leren over de natuur van het Nederlands Caribisch gebied. 

Live en Interactieve Quiz 

De teams (bestaande uit 1-4 deelnemers) konden op twee manieren deelnemen. De deelnemers konden online vanuit huis meedoen of bij een van de uitzendlocaties (bars).

De Quiz was online en live. Hierdoor konden alle teams van de Nederlands Caribische eilanden op dezelfde tijd deelnemen en ook op hetzelfde moment met elkaar en met de presentator van het programma interactie hebben.

De quiz had in totaal 20 meerkeuzevragen. De quiz was in het Engels, maar de vragen waren ook Nederlands, Papiamentu en Papiamento ondertiteld. Vragen gingen over soorten zoals zeeschildpadden, haaien en leguanen.
