Coastal and wetland birds

Objective

Trends in wetland bird abundance and diversity reflect the status of wetlands. Wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems in the world. Wetlands are nursery rooms for a high diversity of species and provide water and productivity upon which many plant and animal species depend for life. Wetlands are indispensable for the ecosystem services that they provide, ranging from freshwater supply, food and building materials, and biodiversity, to flood control, groundwater recharge, and climate change mitigation. The area and quality of wetlands are declining in most regions of the world. As a result, the ecosystem services that wetlands provide to people are affected.
